My Story.

From Artist to Interior Designer.

Born and raised in the Whitsundays, I grew up surrounded by the rich green cane fields and the sparkling azure blue of the Coral Sea. My parents owned the only restaurant in Airlie Beach. From an early age I learned to help out, waiting tables and making awesome milkshakes.

Growing up in paradise was such a privilege. When I wasn’t exploring the local creeks or swimming at the beach, I loved to draw, paint, design clothes and sketch my dream home. I was known as the “arty” one at school. I was also, the first girl in my class allowed to take Technical Drawing. Not sure if the boys liked that!!!

Creative Spirit. Good Eye for Design.

After High School, I was shipped off to Uni to study Art. Many happy years were spent learning the skills of Graphic Design, Photography, Illustration and Printmaking, History of Art & Architecture. There, my eye-catching design in a competition, resulted in my first Public Art commission for the Arts Centre Building, Townsville.

On return to the Whitsundays I landed a job at a local T-shirt Design Studio. Quickly bored, I returned to my backup gig - Hospitality. I fell in love with Scuba Diving…and the Instructor!! For many years I juggled my love of creating art, and my love of working in Tourism.

Over the years I have lived and worked on three 5 star Queensland islands, Fiji, Thailand, Tonga, Bali and Vietnam. I have raised two children along the way, helped in the family business and run holiday homes and apartments. My life has been exciting and as colourful as my art and design work -each life experience or exotic location feeding my creative spirit and eye for design.

My artistic pursuits have ranged from designing fabric, painting for exhibitions , designing public art works in concrete, mosaic and stainless steel, to designing rugs, murals, interiors and making beautiful homes. My paintings have been sold to collectors and leading interior designers in the US, Brazil, Switzerland and Asia.

It was during my “constructivism”stage that I formed an interest in large scale and three dimensional space while working on a Public Art project for the Airlie Beach Lagoon in1999. At the same time I started renovating old houses. It was so easy to become hooked on the whole process -turning something dated and tired into an exciting, new, modernerised space. I went on to renovate eight properties in eight crazy years. During this time I also collaborated with an architect on my tropical Balinese/Queensland style home. I began combining my artistic visions on paper, with learning some of the actual hands-on skills of building and renovation. My formal study in Interior Design began.

In 2014, I travelled through Asia and the Pacific. I was very interested in the vernacular architecture and the new modern designs emerging. Some ideas are so appropriate for our sub-tropical region here in the Whitsundays.

On my return to Australia in 2019, I was invited to Project Manage the revamp of a Belongil, Byron Bay beach house. This project reignited my passion for interiors and creating beautiful unique spaces.

Style SALT is my design studio in the Whitsundays. Born out of all these amazing experiences.
